Tower Hamlets CCG works closely with local mothers and families to commission quality maternity services. This includes offering women a range of choices about their antenatal care and where they would like to give birth.
Tower Hamlets women have a wide range of options available to them, including the Barkantine Birth Centre and the new Lotus Birth Centre, which opened at the Royal London Hospital in 2016. This midwifery-led birthing unit sits alongside the labour ward at the hospital and offers an alternative option for people seeking a ‘home-away-from-home’ environment. Women can also choose to have a home birth.
Specific work that we are doing to improve maternity care locally includes:
- A pilot programme to provide additional support and advice for women with diabetes to help them prepare for pregnancy.
- Supporting Maternity Mates, a service to support women who need help the most during their pregnancy and as new mums.
- Supporting and working closely with the Maternity Voices Partnership.
Tower Hamlets also became a national pioneer site for maternity in 2016, together with Newham and Waltham Forest. As a pioneer, we are working to make it easier and simpler for pregnant women to make informed choices about their antenatal care and place of birth. This includes developing online tools that can be accessed from anywhere.
